WEEK 1 - YOU AS A CONTEMPORY TEACHER

To what extent is it reasonable to conclude that if you are not experiencing positive or negative emotions about the materials and activities in any learning experience, that you are potentially disinterested or not motivated? Discuss in relation to your first emotional response to the nature of this unit.

Throughout learning experiences, if the learner does not experience either positive or negative emotions when looking at or completing the materials and activities, there is a high chance that they are potentially disinterested or not motivated to participate in the learning experience. When I first looked over the expectations and requirements of this unit I was initially overwhelmed. However, after completing the learning activities for week one, it is clear how this unit will contribute to and further my ability to effectively engage and teach students by implementing ICT. However, if I had looked at the activities in week one and not made any connections as to how the learning materials could support my future career I would have become frustrated and possibly unmotivated to engage with or complete any learning activities in the future.

Elaborate on your emotions on engaging further with this unit? Positive, negative. Indifferent?

After completing week one learning activities and reading through the weekly material, I could make a clear connection as to how this unit will support my future as a teacher. Therefore, although my initial reaction to this unit was negative, I have developed a more positive outlook towards this unit. However, due to my lack of technological knowledge, I am still anxious about the requirements of the assignment pieces.

Identify your present values and beliefs about ICT in the classroom. Keep it brief and focused.

I believe that the use of ICT in the classroom is detrimental to keeping students engaged and motivated to learn. Technology plays a significant part in day to day life and is the future, therefore, I believe it should be used in every lesson (where applicable). Educators in the 21st century are required to set up the future generation of adults and due to technology being in every aspect of life it is only natural that is should be taught and used in the classroom setting. If ICT is not used in the classroom the teacher is only setting themselves and the students up for failure.

Your approach to teaching and learning

Teaching and learning is a joint venture undertaken by both the student and the teacher. Students have the ability to teach their teacher new things, therefore, educators in the 21st century must be open to becoming lifelong learners. Moreover, students know how they best learn and what works for them and what does not. Therefore, it is essential that teacher take the time to observe and listen to their students. Also, I strongly believe in trial and error. Having the ability to learn from your mistakes, I believe, is essential to becoming a good teacher. Try out new was of teacher, if your student do not respond positively to it, change your method and try again until you find something that works for both yourself as the teacher and your students.

What experience do you have with ICT in the classroom?

After completing PP1 and working as a teacher aide for 2 years, I have been exposed to various attempts to use ICT in the classroom. For ICT to be effective in the classroom it needs to have a specific purpose with expectations clearly understood by the students. Without clear expectations and purpose, it is easy for students to become distracted by games etc.
